Meet the people, places honored for poverty relief

Shibadong village
in Huayuan county, Central China's Hunan province
Rich in natural beauty and scenic landscapes, Shibadong village was hampered by its rugged terrain, which meant a lack of transportation and arable land.
Shibadong rented land from a neighboring village to plant high-quality kiwis; meanwhile, the tourism industry began booming here, thanks to its unique Miao culture and special landscapes. Some villagers operate restaurants. Others run family inns.
In 2013, the per capita disposable income of the 939 villagers in Shibadong was only 1,668 yuan, with 57 percent of the population living below the poverty line. In 2017, Shibadong officially rid itself of poverty. In 2018, the village's per capita disposable income stood at 12,128 yuan.
