Most Americans doubt tariffs will help US economy, poll shows

A recent YouGov poll reveals that a majority of American adults are skeptical about the benefits of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Chinese imports. According to the survey, nearly half (46 percent) of respondents believe the tariffs will help neither the US nor China's economy, while only 16 percent expect the US to benefit exclusively.
The results underscore a sharp partisan divide. Republicans are more optimistic, with 29 percent believing the tariffs will benefit only the US and 21 percent anticipating mutual benefits. In contrast, democrats are far more doubtful: 61 percent say neither country benefits from a trade war, while 8 percent say only China gains.
The poll also highlights broad recognition of China's role in the US economy. Nearly half (48 percent) of Americans consider trade with China "very important" to the US economy, 31 percent say "somewhat important," and just 3 percent deem it "not at all important".
The survey, conducted on April 16, included responses from 4,430 US adults.
