![]() ![]() The country's top advisory body concluded its annual session yesterday after adopting a resolution that calls for social harmony and expresses firm opposition to secessionist activities in Taiwan. All the advisors should sincerely fulfil their duty in political consultation and democratic supervision by paying closer attention to people's welfare and catering to their needs, according to the resolution passed at the closing meeting of the annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee. It asked the CPPCC members including business leaders, religious figures, academics and celebrities to help the Party and the government solve problems directly concerning people's interests. The document expressed firm opposition to secessionist moves in Taiwan through "constitutional reform". "We shall firmly oppose secessionist activities in any form to seek 'de jure independence' of Taiwan, while sticking to the basic principle of peaceful reunification and 'one country, two systems' to keep peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits," said the resolution. "We shall actively expand exchanges and cooperation across the Straits, promote direct mail, transport and trade links and seek peace, development and welfare for the compatriots on both sides of the Straits with our greatest sincerity," it added. The resolution urged different parties, organizations and people of different ethnic groups under the CPPCC to contribute to the reunification of the motherland and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Nearly 2,200 advisors attended the closing meeting presided over by CPPCC National Committee Chairman Jia Qinglin. During a review of the draft property law and the draft corporate income tax law, the CPPCC members compared notes with the 2,900 lawmakers in NPC and gave suggestions. According to a report adopted at the closing meeting, the CPPCC members submitted 4,516 proposals during the session that started on March 3. Of them, 3,977 were by individual members, said Wu Jianmin, the CPPCC spokesman. They cover issues ranging from macroeconomic controls and modern agriculture to protection of private companies' rights and benefits. There are nearly 2,000 proposals on issues that have a direct bearing on people's life, such as education, healthcare, production safety, housing, employment, farmers' income and environmental protection.
