Eight students from Jimei University, one of the key multidiscipline universities in Fujian province, completed a 50-day internship in Pingtan.
In 2011, Jimei University set up an internship base at Lanshun Aquaculture Company. The eight students arrived in Pingtan on April 2, becoming the first batch of college interns from the university to visit Pingtan.
It has been an amazing 50-day journey, according to the students, who said they have learnt a lot from their internship.
"It didn't occur to us until we arrived here that we need plenty of time to simply put the theory into practice," spoke Jiang Hailing, who majors in abalone breeding.
"You have to check in on the fish larvae when changing water for them. I once forgot to do the checking and almost lost some live larvae had not the group leader given me a heads-up," said Jiang.
The abalone farm is located in a secluded corner of the county, which means a lack of entertainment programs for the students. But they soon fell in love with the group dancing activities at a plaza with women from the dining hall every evening after dinner.
Pingtan is a perfect destination for college interns, according to a university official.
"It is a sea island. The water quality is good without much pollution, which is ideal for the aquaculture industry," said Song Zhenrong, deputy-dean of the aquaculture school of the university.
The diversity in Pingtan's aquaculture industry also adds to Pingtan's attractiveness, as the university can arrange a wider range of curriculum for the interns, said Song.
