《中國大百科全書》第三版是目前中國最大的出版項目，來自全國高等院校和研究機構的2萬多名學者正在為100多個學科撰寫條目。《中國大百科全書》的網絡版計劃在明年上線。

The third edition of the Chinese Encyclopaedia is due to go online for the first time sometime next year, announced the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
中國科學院宣布，《中國大百科全書》第三版的網絡版將在明年首次上線。

Over 20,000 scholars from universities and research institutes across the country will participate in the massive national online encyclopaedia program, including more than 300 academics and 30 members of the CAS, Liu Guohui, associate executive editor-in-chief of the project and director of the Encyclopedia of China Publishing House (ECPH), has told senior scientists.
中國大百科全書出版社社長、《中國大百科全書》第三版執行副總主編劉國輝表示，來自全國高校和科研機構的2萬多名學者將參與該網絡版百科全書的編撰工作，其中包括300余位中科院院士和30多位學部委員。

《中國大百科全書》第三版定位于新型的網絡百科全書（online encyclopaedia），是基于信息化技術和互聯網，進行知識生產、分發和傳播的國家大型公共知識服務平臺（a large national platform for public knowledge service based on information technology and the internet that produces, distributes and spreads knowledge），目標是編纂一部代表世界最高水平的網絡化和數字化的《中國大百科全書》（compile an internet-based digital encyclopaedia on-par with the world's best）。

《中國大百科全書》第三版執行總主編楊牧之在中科院的會議上對資深科學家說：“《中國大百科全書》不是一本書，而是一座文化萬里長城（The Encyclopaedia of China is not a book, but a Great Wall of culture）。”

《中國大百科全書》第三版首期目標為 30余萬條內容，每條約 1000 字（more than 300,000 entries at about 1,000 words each），內容涉及103個學科，是《大英百科全書》的兩倍，規模堪比中文版維基百科。該項目在2011年就已獲中國國務院的批準。

參與中國新百科全書編纂的歷史學家黃安年表示，維基百科是需要格外注意的競爭者，“讀者認為它權威、準確……但我們擁有世界上規模最大、最優質的編纂隊伍……我們的目標不是追趕而是超越（Our goal is not to catch up, but overtake）。”

《中國大百科全書》第一版在1993年問世，內容包含66門學科（66 disciplines），8萬個條目（over 80,000 entries），共計1.264億漢字及5萬余幅插圖。全書共計74卷（74 volumes），包括哲學、社會科學、文學藝術、文化教育、自然科學、工程技術等各個學科和領域。

《中國大百科全書》第二版于2009年4月16日正式出版，總計32卷（正文30卷、索引2卷）、6萬個條目、約6千萬字、3萬幅插圖和1千幅地圖。
