 defendants' pen: 被告席

4月5日，在伊拉克首都巴格達(dá)，伊拉克前總統(tǒng)薩達(dá)姆再次就杜賈爾村案出庭接受盤(pán)問(wèn)。身穿黑色外套的薩達(dá)姆在被告席上顯得輕松且桀驁不馴，不時(shí)地和法官或檢察官調(diào)侃幾句，有時(shí)還能說(shuō)出幾句頗有詩(shī)意的話。這次出庭，薩達(dá)姆承認(rèn)他批準(zhǔn)了將杜賈爾村什葉派村民處死的命令，因?yàn)樗嘈庞凶C據(jù)表明那些村民卷入了試圖暗殺他的陰謀。

報(bào)道中的defendants' pen就是“被告席”，這里著重講一下“pen”。pen除表示我們?nèi)粘Ｋ?jiàn)的“鋼筆”外，還有一層意思指a fenced enclosure for animals（圈養(yǎng)牲畜的圍欄），如：a pen of sheep（一欄羊），由此，pen可引申為“監(jiān)禁”或“監(jiān)獄”。在報(bào)道中，pen表示“把被告席位隔開(kāi)的圍欄”。
另外，pen也可做動(dòng)詞用，指“把…關(guān)在欄中；禁錮”，其過(guò)去分詞有兩種形式“penned”或“pent”，舉兩個(gè)例子：The sheep have to be penned every night.（羊群每晚都得關(guān)進(jìn)圈里。）
The desire to travel has been pent up for the last two years.（近兩年來(lái)心中老是憋著想出門(mén)旅行的愿望。）
